5.0 out of 5 stars A must read!, 5 Jan 2002
By A Customer
What would it be like to struggle with a written language that no one else in the world can read and crack the code? What would it be like to then visit remnants of a lost civilisation no one can determine what they mean and be the one, the only one in the world to find out what they say? Champollion, like a few great minds before and after him had the luck to be in that enviable position where you find out that you were right all along and are able to surpass your fellow men in huge strides. This is a truly breathtaking book and it is sadly fitting that Champollion died shortly after - what else could he have achieved had he lived. He darts as enthusiatically from one place to the next, you feel his excitement and enthusiasm. He would no doubt be a tv presenter in the Simon Schama mould in modern times.
