Product Description
Synopsis
Guided by machines from Earth, the colony world of Copernica has become a stable human outpost, a world not dissimilar to Earth itself, with a burgeoning population and culture of its own. But Rehan Mihajlovic, a dealer in antiquarian goods, is about to find out that history is only as reliable as those who write it, and that death, when it comes, is never very far away...

4.0 out of 5 stars The Human Abstract, 18 Jun 2004
George Mann has created a vivid and believable world within this novella. It feels like a real possibility, unlike other science fiction stories I have read which tend to turn to fantasy. The story begins, like so many others, with life being very ordinary. Then with the introduction of a book an unfolding mystery ensues. The story leads the main characters to several destinations, meeting new people along the way; this means that with the constant shift of locale the reader never feels bored. The determination of Rehan, 'a dealer in antiquarian goods', to unravel the mystery he uncovered provides not only a clear focus for him but also for the story as a whole. My only minor quibble would be that the revelations should have been more gradual, rather than two main ones leading to the third ultimate surprise. But I must stress that really is insignificant really when compared to the rest of this fresh, open and professional prose.
