Product Description

Synopsis

At all stages of education, children and young people in public care do less well than their peers. They achieve fewer passes, they are nine times more likely to have a statement of educational need and are 13 times more likely to be permanently excluded from school. And their underachievement progressively worsens as they get older. How can we help to address this persistent problem? This guide will help address the greatest difficulty identified by teachers in the education of looked after children - the behaviour of the children themselves. Looking at the long-term effects of trauma in childhood and how this can affect learning, it explains how by giving attention to their special physiological, emotional and psychological needs, traumatised children can be helped to derive full benefit from their life at school. Consisting of a book and a CD Rom PowerPoint presentation and a set of handouts, this resource recommends ways in which any traumatised children can be best supported in their learning and what teachers in the classroom, foster carers at home, and social workers and other professionals working with children can do to help them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Succinct and inciteful!, 22 Dec 2005
By A Customer
I read this book in one sitting. It gives you great information about trauma and the related behaviours a child may exhibit and them exemplifies an nine point 'curriculum' for helping children to manage/overcome these. It was easy to read as incorporates a powerpoint presentation. I printed these off and annoteated them with further information. It comes with some casestudies of children for a group to discuss if presenting this as a seminar to colleagues or other professionals. The book is aimed at teachers, social workers and carers, but I think if you are involved in adoption or fostering then it will be a really useful read.
