5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Insight, 6 Dec 2004
By A Customer
This book provides some amazing inside view of the Tamil Tiger movement and their philosophy. It is purely facinating to learn what happened behind scenes and the personal side of people who are in the media spotlight. Though the book does go heavily into feminism which may bore you if you are not into feminist philosophy, it makes up for it in its brilliant coverage of the armed struggle and the urban warfare. I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone interested in Sri Lankan affairs.

2.0 out of 5 stars only buy if studying LTTE!, 22 April 2006
By Thomas J. Hackett "Tom" (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is an interesting book and an important one to read if, like me, you are studying the LTTE. However, do not open it expecting an objective account of the history of the organisation. Adele Balasingham is the Australian wife of Anton Balasingham, a Tamil nationalist and the main ideological 'guru' of the LTTE. She is therefore clearly biased in the LTTE's favour, and is extremely selective and biased in her telling of the history of the organisation. For example, none of the high-level political assassinations that the LTTE have been implicated in, including that of Indian prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, are mentioned in the book. Nor are any of the LTTE terrorist attacks in which civilians were killed.

The book switches back and forth between a detailed but selective telling of the general history of the LTTE, the author's personal recollections of events, and attempts at sociological and academic observations of some of the issues raised. The general and personal 'history', though selective, will be extremely useful to anyone doing an in-depth study of the LTTE. The attempts at academic observation are next to useless as such due to their frequent contradictions and obvious bias, but they are occasionally interesting and helpful as examples of LTTE propaganda.

It should also be noted that the book is extremely badly written, with many ungrammatical sentences and some ineffective and grating attempts to be literary and poetic; the frequent switching back and forth between the different elements of commentary detailed above adds to this to make the book a frustrating read.

My basic advice would be not to buy this book unless you are doing any kind of in-depth study of the LTTE. If you are, however, it may well be very helpful, due to the selective but detailed historical information contained in it, and as an example of LTTE propaganda.

This book is a disgrace written by someone who has a warped view of the world. She totally ignores the vile terrorism of the LTTE and its ethnic nationalism cause. Read more
