5.0 out of 5 stars don't judge a book by its cover, 23 April 2001
By A Customer
The cover of this book gives a pretty false impression of the contents inside, as it seems to suggest a national inquirer style gossip-fest but instead provides some wonderfully insightful, thought-provoking essays on various trends in 90's cinema, particularly the increasing vertical integration and the rise of low-budget independents. Though the author has a vast experience of cinema, he's reasonably generous to current films, though his optimism is tempered by the growing influence of conglomorotes on the medium. I f it has a fault, it's the slight schizophenia between the hard-headed essays from the Vilage Voice and the fawning, sychphantic tone of some of the pieces he wrote for Boxoffice. Still an extremely readable account of the last deade in movies

5.0 out of 5 stars Best, most comprehensive overview of Hollywood in the '90s, 23 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Essay-oriented books about the entertainment industry tend to be either irrelevant or self-aggrandizing on the part of the writer. "Hollywood Migraine" is neither, but rather an insightful, educational and remarkably honest, no-holds-barred overview of the business of movies as it progressed, evolved and devolved throughout the 1990s. Author Ray Greene clearly knows his stuff and speaks authoritatively throughout, offering a view of the movie business that never condescends to its audience and never attempts to candy-coat the honest truth, no matter how sobering it often is. At the same time, Greene's love for the medium is contagious, a joy to read from first page to last.
