Product Description
Synopsis
Sri Lanka is the "big" destination in South Asia as the island settles back into its tranquil tropical island role. It is now possible to travel to areas, particularly in the north and northeast, which have been inaccessible for a number of years. This totally updated and revised guide provides everything a visitor needs from chilling out on the glorious beaches to exploring the seven UNESCO World Heritage sites. This travel guide to Sri Lanka is designed to enable any visitor to explore the beaches, as well as the island's interior and its religious and historical associations. With details both on and off the beaten track, the book provides an insight into Sri Lanka's history, culture and religions. Full coverage is provided of all the best beaches and beach activities, including watersports, and guidance is given on planning a route around the island. The guide features all activities from wildlife watching to cycling and Ayurveda therapy. Lively, informative listings of where to stay, eat and drink, highlighting eco-friendly lodges and locally run places plus suggested itineraries and routes are also included.

5.0 out of 5 stars informative... essential..., 3 Nov 2003
Having been to Sri Lanka six times in the past five years, I would say this is the best and most informative guide on the marketplace. The newest edition is particularly informative giving accurate information on hotel prices, bars and restaurants, must-sees and climate information. I also found this guide particularly useful in terms of its political astuteness and its portrayal of contemporary Sri Lanka. It is a book one can dip into with its 'don't miss' sections. I found the maps accurate and didn't need to buy an additional map. (Carrying around one information guide was a blessing - usually one ends up lugging a rucksac's worth of information around which is both weighty, time consuming and unnecessary). The text is lively and witty and I would definitely recommend this as a must-read for both backpackers and also if one is based in a particular region - with so many all-inclusive resorts springing up in Sri Lanka, it would be a great shame not to arm yourself with this guide and get out and about seeing as much of the country as possible and experiencing the real culture.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Stuff!, 13 Nov 2003
I found this book to be absolutely bang on the money! I also had a Lonely Planet guide with me and didn't really need to use it once! In fact, the few times I did look at it (especially when I was in the North East) it was frequently wrong in comparison to the Footprint guide anyway. I especially liked the slight departure from Footprint's somewhat "formal" style of old, and reading Edward Aves's text was like being guided through the country by a trusted yet very informative old friend. An absolute gem!
