Some media books leave you with a fixed set of methods for achieving results within limited parameters....Rich Media by Studio Lab is more like a good set of tools enabling you to build projects that can go in any direction.

My favourite section by far is the section on animation using video as source material. The steps are clear and within a very short time you can be up and running 'sampling' the fluid motion from video and encoding it in your project. The use of other tools to augment this process (Photoshop, After Effects) really helps workflow and results. Very clear.

The Good Cop Bad Cop project which deals with high-impact low-bandwidth approaches to projects had my film-making friends jumping around arranging the elephants for crossings over the digital alps. The chapter has an excellent description of how to shoot high bandwidth and retain numerous versions of the material for use on the web or film however it would have been nice to see some of the worksheets/planning criteria used by the team to let others benefit from their experience.

As a computer based musician I thought initially that the sound section of the book (which is considerable in size) would not be of use however it's slowly becoming my reference for audio manipulation within Flash. All audio concerns in one physical place is always better than 20 websites to run around.

Quibble list
------------
* The review of two tools for encoding video into Flash is possibly unnecessary. It would be enough to make the assumption that this can be done and to move onto how converted video can be used and abused within webprojects.
* The CD and weblinks to completed projects could have been more complete - some projects on the CD only have snippets of the final project which can be frustrating - especially when there is no obvious web link to follow to see the whole thing.

Summary
-------
I haven't got through all the chapters as yet because each chapter has given me ideas for a hundred projects! Combining the knowledge aquired from all chapters will leave your media skills samurai-like. Easily worth a buy.

What can I say!!! - As a student studying Multi-Media Technology With interests in Music, Video and the web - this book certainly delivers. From After Effects to SoundForge this book gives you detailed information on how to use these applications to create the media required to create those amazing Flash-tastic websites we all keep dropping our jaws at! - I am quite familiar with most of the applications in this book but I find it extremely hard to keep my fingers in all the pies at once so to speak and when you need a book on Acid or a book on Cubase, etc, it all adds up, especially for a student. So even though the price of this book seems a bit steep you've got to realise that in the end your getting more for your money.
