5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome! The best book on ActionScript programming bar none., 2 Mar 2003
This book is well written and absolutely crammed full of useful examples. It is split into two parts: Part one contains 17 chapters which tell you exactly how to use ActionScript and there are a number of example files on the CD to practice on, Part Two is over 600 pages of ActionScript Dictionary, with every piece of ActionScript code clearly explained with examples.

Accompanying the book is a CD ROM version of the dictionary with three additional chapters and even more code explanations and examples than the book. You can look for an ActionScript code item, view the description and see a working Flash file example all from the CD interface.

Perhaps not for the fainthearted, some grounding in ActionScript is needed. I would recommend reading Sham Bhangal's Foundation ActionScript for Macromedia Flash MX, also published by Friends of ED, first before tackling this book.

The book is also far superior to Colin Mook's ActionScript the Definitive Guide. Although Mook's tome is a well written book, like all other O'Reilly books (and Microsoft Help files) it is only any good if you already know the subject. Good for reference, useless for learning anything. The Macromedia Flash MX Designer's ActionScript Reference by contrast is well written, easily accesible, makes learning the subject interesing and also has all the references you need in accompanying dictonary once you know the subject.

An indespensible companion for anyone serious in using Flash programming.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but I prefer Moock, 4 Nov 2002
A qualified thumbs up to this megalith of a book. It's well written, includes good examples useful in real-world applications and is probably worth the cost just for the ActionScript dictionary included on the CD.

here comes the BUT...

I personally prefer to learn anything by having the overall concepts and structure laid out and described so that I can really get a grip of what is going on, rather than just being given lots of examples of how to do specific things. This book does the latter - it tells me HOW, but it doesn't consistently tell me WHY. This is in contrast to Moock's 'ActionScript the definitive guide' which, though less 'chatty' and perhaps less easily accessible, takes you through the whole structure of the language from the bottom up.

I'm glad to have Bhangal's Big Book to be going on with, but I'll still be getting the MX update to Moock's Marvelous Masterpiece when it's released in the new year.
