5.0 out of 5 stars Imagination + QuickTime = I.Q., 1 Jun 2002
By birbilis@kagi.com (Patras, Greece) - See all my reviews
Since I was one of the early reviewers of this book's chapters and you might already know me from my postings on the QuickTime mailing lists, I thought I should share with you my opinion on this book, in case it helps you decide whether it suits your needs or not...
What I liked most during the reviewing process is that even the first raw text coming from the authors for review was very easy to follow and very immersive, keeping you reading till the end of each chapter, or even into the following chapter(s), since there's a quite logical linear succession of those.

Apart from the QuickTime VR stuff which is my favorite and most familiar technology (and which is indeed covered extensively in the book, especially the QuickTime VR panoramic multinode scenes), I loved those chapters that delve into the art of film-making and linear video editing and give you valuable insight, putting you once at a time into the boots of a director, a scene designer, a photography/lights specialist, a film editor, etc.

I also liked a lot the step-by-step examples that show off the incredible power of QuickTime-savvy software like QuickTime VR Authoring Studio (QTVRAS), LiveStage Pro, SoundsaVR, MediaCleaner Pro, just to count some. The even nicer thing is that all these examples have been included in the accompanying CD, together with Totally Hip's incredible "LiveStage Pro" (both PC & Mac), among other useful software.

Hands-on information in this book that is worth mentioning is tips and examples on making skined QuickTime movies, compressing video and sound, adding directional sound to QuickTime VR panoramic scenes, combining multinodal panoramic scenes with maps, stitching panoramic images, making interactive movies (containing buttons/menus that use the power of QuickTime wired sprites), at least this is some of the stuff that comes to my mind at the moment.

Well, it's been more than one month since I reviewed those chapters, so I hope the authors will forgive me if I forgot to mention some of the cool examples included in the book ;o)

cheers,
George

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent - a book that is actually about Quicktime!, 9 Jan 2004
By Peter Coupe - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have purchased 3 books that purport to be about Quicktime authoring. The other two are actually about using LiveStage for Quicktime authoring, which is not the same thing!
This book, another excellent manual from the 'Friends of Ed' actually shows you how to lift the bonnet (hood) and see how Quicktime is actually assembled, and how to edit directly in Quicktime, without a secondary application as a go-between. Did you know that Quicktime has 14 different track types? Nope, neither did I - I was thinking one audio and one video!
It shows in detail how Quicktime interacts with other software packages and also shows how to deploy Quicktime through a range of other media.
I learned a lot from this book, and would recommend it to students and colleagues alike.
The sections on Flash and QTVR I found especially useful in some project work that I am currently undertaking.
By the way - it does mention and show how to build using LiveStage - but it also shows how to achieve an awful lot without it! Perfect combination!
