Product Description

Review
This is a study of Britain's gangsters - mad, bad and dangerous to know, but a fascinating bunch. Clarkson finds them charismatic, each a god in his own universe, and laps up the violent and gruesome details as if he feels privileged to write about such people. He writes about thugs like Cocky Warren with an awe-filled reverence as if the mobster himself was looking over the authors shoulder demanding he do him proud. Clarkson devotes a chapter each to the family businesses and to smooth-faced killers like the Adams family, Jimmy Moody and Kenneth Noye, whom the author calls Kenny, and describes as a genius of the underworld. The A-class thugs are gentleman gangsters, not murderers and con-men. The women particularly fascinate. One is Josie Daly, the Millionaire Madam of London whose apple-faced Granny-next-door picture belies her cunning managerial skills in the prostitution business - she ran a massage training business which gave the girls NVQ qualifications. The style is tabloid-ese - people are rubbed out, they deal in puff, the police are always the cops or cozzers, they all play the game, they look after their own. Clarkson (whose own moody picture looks like a gangster manqu?) goes for his subjects with considerable relish, hooked on the glamour of those who laugh at the law. There is a gram of the salacious in us all and the book will appeal not only to wannabe gangsters of all ages but to the rest of us who peek inside its red cover. (Kirkus UK)

2.0 out of 5 stars 'Sky One' Style Sound Bites, 5 April 2002
By A Customer
Wensley Clarkson has apparently met most of the people in his book. Iam not sure when that was because most of the main protaganists are either in prison or semi-retired and the content has either been written, re-written or discussed in the back of a taxi a long time ago. This book smacks of a publishers opportunity more than a journalistic desire to expose interesting new facts.

It was well printed and bound however. Well done Blake's but Wensley please take a rest for a while!

3.0 out of 5 stars It should have been better, 22 Jan 2002
By A Customer
Well what can I say. I expected a lot better. The 'gangs' mentioned are either in prison or semi retired. Most of the content has been around in the Sunday Press for the last 2 years or sometimes in other books here I am refering to the A team,Paul Ferris, Noye and Cocky. There is a good chance we are going to see Part 2 so Wensley please give us something we have not read, seen or heard before.

4.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding., 13 Jan 2002
By A Customer
After looking at the cover for about a week and then finally deciding to begin reading it I was hooked. The author gives a real sense of being there and experiencing the emotion. It is perfect for any aged reader. The language, although detailed and specific, is easy to understand for anybody and made totally believable by the excellent use of detail. I am well impressed.
