5.0 out of 5 stars Straightforward and sensitive book, 27 May 2007
I have a relative with a terminal illness, and I've been looking for books to help my children cope with the future.

This is one of the best I have found. It's honest and open about death and how people feel without being blunt or hurtful. The text and pictures are simple and clear. It's refreshing to read a book like this about human beings - not dinosaurs, foxes or badgers.

A boy is learning about death - he finds a dead butterfly on a windowsill, and his mother explains what has happened to it. Later, the boy has to come to terms with the death of his uncle: sad times, good memories, irrational fears and how the family cope in the short and longer term.

Another reviewer was less happy with this book because it had not faith or spiritual element. For me, this is one of this books great strengths. It does not deny or contradict anything religious, but would allow you to 'fill-in' if that was what you wanted. We're not a religious family, and neither is our ill relative, so I feel this book is very much in line with our position.

Suitable for boys and girls 3ish-8ish. As with all these books - read through first!

5.0 out of 5 stars When Uncle Bob Died, 19 Sep 2007
By H. Preest (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
My husband died when my children were 2 and 3 years old. This book was fantastic. The children loved me reading it to them and we talked about it alot. There is only one bit which talks of the frankness of cremation (I think it uses the word burning from memory) and I changed this part when I read it as I didn't want to frighten them. I just said that cremation was when the body turns into ashes and they have always accepted that without question. The book helps children to see that it is o.k to be sad but they can also have fun playing whilst still keeping the memories close to their hearts. Well worth the purchase.

3.0 out of 5 stars A book which deals with death in a direct way., 2 Nov 2001
By A Customer
This book deals with death in a direct way. It doesn't mince around the fact that people die, that sometimes young people die too. There aren't many books that deal with the topic of death - and none which take this direct approach. Personally I believe in life after death and this book does not cover this subject. If you are looking for a book which gives a spiritual/biblical insight you would need to look elsewhere or use this book in conjunction with other titles available.

The best book I have read as far as content is concerned is When Someone You Love Dies by William Coleman and published by Augsburg press in America. This book covers a wide range of very difficult issues from a spiritual but also practical stand point. Advice is given to youngsters about different ways to deal with their emotions - writing letters; talking; visiting the cemetary; going to a funeral; AIDS and Suicide are also covered briefly. It is not a book for a child to read on their own. However it is a very useful book for children's workers/teachers/adults to have on their shelves. Photocopying the relevant chapters for a young person or even discussing the points raised in the book would be an excellent approach.

When Uncle Bob died is a good book ... but for those who want to explain the reality of life after death to youngsters extra material is required. I would also recommend a title that is being published next year: The Big Green Tree at Number 11 (Tammy and Jake learn about Life and death) if you are looking for a more general but spiritual approach to the issue of death.
