5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book!, 22 May 2001
By A Customer
Packed with sensible advice and in-depth reviews, this is the internet guide I'd been waiting for. Two features set it apart: it's written from the down-to-earth perspective of a British researcher, who has clearly used the sites and worked out their foibles - definitely a time-saver for the user; secondly, the book entitles you to free online updates from the GWG website which means you get even more reviews, and latest reports on new sites and changes.

The chapter on tracing ancestors with military connections was particularly helpful, as were the tips on saving time and money. Since buying this book I've given it to a several friends of varying degrees of expertise in family history (from a recent beginner to an old hand who had only just gone online) and they have all been delighted. This should be on every family historian's bookshelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even better than the indispensable first edition, 9 Jun 2002
By A Customer
When I bought the last edition of this book it was a revelation: intelligent reviews of well-selected internet sites, together with sensible advice about how best to use your computer in building up a family history, plus updates of the review via the Good Web Guide website. However, the web moves on, and particularly in family history where there has been an explosion in both official sites and ones provided by altruistic enthusiasts. The new edition reflects this, with about three times as many sites reviewed as in the first edition, and many more headings to help you navigate your way through the book as well as the web. The short introductory pieces are full of good advice to encourage you to explore areas that you may not previously have considered. It is a wonderful book, and well worth buying even if you have the first edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastically useful book, 17 Mar 2004
This new edition of Caroline Peacock's guide to the best genealogy sites is great. It has been fully updated and especially useful are the new sites which she has discovered for tracing ancestors in Europe, west and east, plus the plethora of sites which have old maps, books and photos. There is a very useful section at the start of the book on how to get going with your research on the net. The additional online service is very good too. I found the section on Searching for Names really helpful in my research.
