5.0 out of 5 stars Appealing to All Ages, 3 Feb 2001
By A Customer
I was first read this book in Fourth Grade (at about 8 years old), and over the years I have continually borrowed it from our local library (I am now 27). It is a wonderful ORIGINAL story about two sisters who are naughty (and the consequences and adventures that come from being so). It has witches and animals, detectives and townspeople, and for all that it was written in 1944, is completely timeless. This is a fantastic book that I would recommend to anyone of any age.

5.0 out of 5 stars A children's story with magic and adventure, 18 Jul 2000
By A Customer
I read and re-read this book many year's ago when it was first published and then handed my copy to our children in their turn who similarly loved it. It has adventure, magic and a subtle sense of humour. (Bendigo the bear who steals the zoo keeper's Times to read in his cage at night). There is great imagination. The children are nowhere near as 'good' as, say, those in Swallows and Amazons. Turning yourselves into kangaroos in order to bounce upon your enemies is a nice thought. Quite a lot of the story still has its relevance when the children's father has to be rescued from an evil tyrant in an oppressed country. As you would expect with Linklater it is well written. Nicolas Bentley's marvellous illustrations add greatly to the enjoyment of the book. I am very pleased it has been released now in paperback form so that at last I can recommend it and know that it is available again on the shelves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Treasured childhood book, 19 Mar 2004
By A Customer
I read this book whilst at primary school, and tracked it down through booksleuth - A book you will find hard to put down, not only suitable for the younger members of the family, but those young at heart searching for a magic, mystical getaway!

an imaginative, and in places dark, story ideal for children, with more imagination than most available childrens books, and better written too.
