Product Description

Alan Riach, The Scotsman, 16.06.01

It is a real skill to describe compellingly events that seem to lack dramatic action and clear resolution. Williamson has it.

Dilys Rose

Calmly compelling, strangely engaging.

5.0 out of 5 stars And the Beat goes on . . ., 15 Aug 2002
By A Customer
Imagine if 'On the Road' had been set in Scotland and Canada, and you come close to the premise of 'Strange Faith'. Although undoubtedly influenced by the beat generation, this debut novel is carefully crafted, and the journey it describes has a timeless air. Moments of humour and surrealism pepper the narrative, and Malcolm, the main character, is more complex than many existential heroes, and so manages to avoid the trap of solipsism.
The haunting opening story about the cannibals (don't ask!) is an exquisite slice of magic realism, and one of the most beautiful pieces of writing I have experienced for a long time.
I'm looking forward to Williamson's next book.

3.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful motion, acheived through stillness., 8 Aug 2001
By A Customer
For a first novel this is good, if not quite great. The hero drifts somewhat aimlessly, but in doing so reminds us that the wonders of the world are just as approachable through chance and random opportunities taken as they are through the workings out of any master plan we may conceive. Sometimes more so. Funnily enough, although the hero travels so far, we are left with a vague feeling that he has moved only a few inches. The novel is not so much concerned with journeys made, and the consumption of images, sensations and 'characters' with which travelling is normally associated, but rather with the sheer oddness of travel. The sense of dislocation and superficiality is wonderfully evoked. We are reminded that there are moments when we look back to see how far we have come and see that we haven't moved at all, yet somehow everything is made strange. Our home as we had remembered it is gone, and we must strive to make a new one.

All in all then, a good first try, and symptoms of (hopefully) great things to come.
