Product Description
Synopsis
Of the 107 trophies Glasgow Rangers boast, only one was claimed on foreign shores. The triumph over Moscow Dynamo in the 1972 European Cup Winners' Cup final in the famous Nou Camp Stadium is the achievement three decades of Rangers teams have tried, and failed, to emulate. "To Barcelona and Beyond" charts the twists and turns of that famous European campaign and tells the real story of the men who made it happen. Through in-depth interviews with the Nou Camp heroes and comprehensive profiles, this unique collection of tales reveals how each of the 11 homegrown players found themselves at the centre of one of Scotland's rare European triumphs and just where football's rollercoaster took them in the 33 years that have followed. With one chapter dedicated to each of the 11 medal winners, the author discovers which player would have walked into Brazil's World Cup team, what influence Rod Stewart and Bill Cosby had on one post-Barcelona career and why Rangers stand accused of ignoring the achievement of one of the club's most revered teams. The class of '72 included Scottish player of the year winners Sandy Jardine, John Greig, David Smith and Derek Johnstone as well as fellow internationals Peter McCloy, Alfie Conn, Colin Stein, Alex McDonald and Willie Johnston. The long-serving Willie Mathieson, credited as the trophy-winning team's unsung hero by manager Willie Waddell, completes an eclectic group who fused together on a May night in Spain to create a piece of football history. Each has a fascinating story to tell of the ups and downs life in the Old Firm goldfish bowl created. For the generations of football fans too young to have witnessed the success of '72, "To Barcelona and Beyond" is an unmissable guide to the men who conquered Europe with Rangers. For the tens of thousands who celebrated with them all those years ago, it represents an emotional stroll down memory lane.

1.0 out of 5 stars Misleading title, 28 Sep 2007
Found it pretty poor and a couple of chapters seemed to drag on just to fill the book. One for the avid fans wanting to read up on times gone by.
Also surely the champions of europe are the team that wins the european cup??? not UEFAs now scraped third tier cup

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read, 9 Nov 2006
At last, a welcome change from the usual books reflecting on past sporting success. Split into separate interviews with all the main players involved on the historic night, each chapter offers a sporting life style interview on each member of the team. Barcelona was a special night for Rangers fans but it surely was a life-changing event for the men involved. Not only does the author get the players to give their thoughts on the run and the final but there is a career retrospective on them all both on the events leading up to Barcelona and following it. Good, informative read.

4.0 out of 5 stars nostalgic read!, 7 Nov 2006
Interesting insight into the Players thoughts and feelings at this exciting time. Also good to catch up with what some of them are doing now. Each player has his own chapter so easy book to dip in and out of-went down well with the rangers fans in this house especially the older one who could remember the games!

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read but...
the 'Champions of Europe' tag is misleading. We won the Cup Winners Cup, not the European Cup. We have never been Champions of Europe (not yet anyway!).
