Product Description

Product Description

This book covers the three units of the GCSE in Applied ICT which can be taken as a two-year course from September 2002 or a one-year course from September 2003. It will be an invaluable text for students studying this course for assessment by any of the examination boards. The Assessment grid for Edexcel has been included in the book Unit 1 is a very practical unit and the student is shown how to use various applications including a web browser, word processing, database, spreadsheet and multimedia presentation software. Unit 2 covers the ways in which ICT is used in different types of organisation. It includes numerous discussion points and ideas for students to research. It takes the student through the various stages of designing and implementing an ICT system. Unit 3 explores how individuals, families, clubs, people at work and community groups use ICT. Up-to-date case studies are used as the basis for discussion and exercises, with suggestions and guidance for work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, 16 Aug 2007
By A. J. HAWKEN "Tony Hawken" (London - UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is well presented and for GCSE level students, the concepts are generally presented well - much better than the AS an A-level offerings by the same author.

As well as including the basic concepts about each topic there is practical work, typically involving a Microsoft product. These are step-by-step instructions on how to do something, such as create a form in Access or perform a mailmerge. These lack vital details in places, which can lead to a frustrated reader. Throughout the book there are advertisements to other books such as Basic Excel 2000 - by the same author, presumably to plug the gaps in the text.

There are also some rather contrived assignments - possibly approved coursework. One involves a vendor called Ginger John. I'm sure that this will cause a few giggles in most classrooms.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great book, a little long, 22 Nov 2003
By A Customer
This is a fair price for a fair book, I purchased this, along with a few others in preparation for my GCSES's this year and I find this book the most detailed, but a little heavy going. It, unlike many other books gives more insight into theroy ICT which is useful. Overall this is a good book, but it is worth looking around for others as there are better ones on the market.
