3.0 out of 5 stars Anecdote-heavy film biog, 19 Jun 2001
By A Customer
This autobiography will disappoint those after detailed information about the films Val Guest was involved in. While Guest wrote or directed such well-known movies like Oh Mr Porter, The Quatermass Xperiment and Confessions Of A Window Cleaner, there ain't much fascinating detail about what it was like behind the scenes on these movies. Too much of the book is either too personal or too luvvy ("and then Hitch and Cary Grant walked in"). But it's still a nice read for the most part, written by a man whose long life has spanned the many changes in film-making.

2.0 out of 5 stars Chatty but disappointing autobiography, 5 Aug 2001
By A Customer
Like so many second-rate British film-makers, Val Guest is chiefly remembered for his work on various Hammer Films. As such, it is particularly unsatisfying to find that his autobiography offers nothing of value about these films, tending instead to concentrate on his dreary early comedies. Guest's tone is engaging and friendly, but the editors seem to have got their priorities wrong. Poor marks for a bland, nondescript cover, too.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lost Opportunity, 6 Nov 2005

I was SO looking forward to reading this book. It should have been a must for any fan of British films. Unfortunately though, Guest spends far too much time harping on about how talented and brilliant his wife is. Be that as it may, perhaps a more appropriate title would have been 'An Ode To Mrs. Guest'..

Val Guest was so well-loved by the actors he worked with in the 1950's that many of them called him " Dad " even though they were the same age or older ! Read more
