5.0 out of 5 stars A triumph of research and writing., 28 Nov 2001
By A Customer
This extremely handsom book, bulging with eye-popping photos from Lee's own archive, is one of the most scrupulously researched film biographies I've ever read. Just as an example, it makes the British film and TV industry of the early fifties spring to life right in front of you- never mind the more familiar Hammar stuff Lee is famous for. And the writing is insightful and intelligent from beginning to end...There ARE one or two other books about Lee, certainly. Accept no substitutes, however. This is a real scorcher.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential!, 15 Nov 2001
By A Customer
This lovingly-written tribute to Christopher Lee CBE is an essential purchase for his many fans. While those who grew up on the Hammer Horrors might be disappointed by the lack of space devoted to their prefered career strand, aficianados of Lee's mainstream work are in for a treat. The pictures are also something very special too. Written with Lee's full backing, this is simply a marvelous record of a marvelous career.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great biography and not just for fans, 9 Dec 2002
By Andrew Cartmel - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Any Christopher Lee fan will be delighted with this book. So will anyone who enjoyed Rigby's English Gothic, a definitive history of the horror film in England. Rigby is ideally placed to write the autobiography of one of England's leading horror stars - although Lee himself would sigh philosophically at being thus pigeon-holed. Working from primary sources, and numerous interviews with his subject, Rigby provides a literate, witty and highly authoritative overview of the life and work (they're virtually synonymous) of this great English star. Full of detail, the book provides the inside story, balancing a respectful tone with some refreshingly honest criticism of the actor's weaker films. It never sinks into sycophancy, so the reader tends to respect Rigby's judgements. Like English Gothic this volume is handsomely presented and is a must for anyone interested in the subject.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, thorough coverage of Lee's career on screen
I found this to be the ideal book on Lee's career. Yes, it's very favorably inclined toward Lee, but Rigby never promises to be coolly objective; he likes Lee's work as an actor... Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Lightweight and fawning
This is a real disappointment: particularly for those who have read Rigby's earlier offering English Gothic. The strength of the latter was the verbose, informed critiques. Read more
