I found this book really helpful as a vocabulary reference, but don't buy it if you are looking for anything more. There is a good description of the way the arabic alphabet works, but beyond that it is restricted to essentially a vocab list with some fun exercises to help you learn. It is definatly not a text book but works pretty well in conjungtion with a beginner's arabic course.

The basic idea of the book is that you learn to recognise on sight 100 key words in Urdu, using little tear-out cards that have an English word on one side with the Urdu script for the Urdu word, together with a transliteration, on the other. You don't need to focus on remembering individual Urdu letters (which is good because most differ depending on where they are in a word), but after a while you begin to recognise them. A fun book to use with your children as well. If you thought Urdu script would just be impossible for you to recognise, give this book a try.
