Product Description
From the Inside Flap
As the breed’s name tells, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi derives from Cardiganshire, Wales, where this tough and mobile ‘dwarf’ was used to control unruly cattle. A working farm dog, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi possesses a devilish fearlessness, required to nip at the heels of wild horses, and the intelligence of a fox, which his head and tail preferably resemble. It is this fox-brush tail that distinguishes the Cardigan Corgi from his cousin, the Pembroke, though the two Welsh breeds derive from different lineage. Although low in stature, the Cardigan is not a ‘small dog’ – this enduring working dog is a down-to-earth canine, whose work ethic and spirit are only matched by his devotion to his family and super-canine intelligence. This book provides the much-needed factual information about the Cardigan Welsh Corgi breed and its ancestry, character and standard, as well as proper selection, feeding, basic obedience and house-training and preventative health care. The new owner will welcome advice about puppy-proofing the home, general safety and preventing potential puppy problems, such as chewing and separation anxiety. In addition to an authoritative, lively text, this book presents over 135 photographs in full colour, which prove to be as informative as they are attractive. Helpful hints and important information are highlighted to provide easy access to everything the reader needs to know about life with a Cardigan Welsh Corgi. Whether it’s basic training, allergies or fleas, this book is the way to prevention, providing the reader with the necessary guidance an owner needs from puppyhood through the senior years. Recommended by top breeders and trainers, this book is the responsible first choice of every new owner of a Cardigan Welsh Corgi. Topics discussed include: History of the Cardigan Welsh Corgi; Characteristics of the Cardigan Welsh Corgi; The Cardigan Welsh Corgi Breed Standard; The Cardigan Welsh Corgi puppy; Everyday care of your Cardigan Welsh Corgi; Training your Cardigan Welsh Corgi; Health care of your Cardigan Welsh Corgi; Your senior Cardigan Welsh Corgi; Showing your Cardigan Welsh Corgi.

In Great Britain the name 'Corgi' will immediately evoke mental pictures of the short-legged and short-tailed little fellows that are so often seen behind, around and in front of members of the Royal family out on an afternoon's stroll. There are a few dog fanciers that respond to the word by asking, 'Which Corgi, the short-tailed or long?' Two quite different dogs carry the name Corgi in their official designation - the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the lesser known Cardigan Welsh Corgi. What very few people understand, however, is that the two are not simply different varieties of the same breed nor is tail length (or absence) the only distinguishing characteristic that separates the two. The Cardigan and Pembroke trace their lineage back to entirely different ancestors, and these predecessors dictate much of what constitutes the differences in appearance and temperament that exist in the two breeds to this day.
