Product Description

From the Inside Flap

This Special Rare Breed Edition devoted to the Japanese Shiba is the only book of its kind about this wonderful spitz breed from Japan. Prized in its native land as a ‘Natural Monument’, the Shiba is believed to be Japan’s most ancient breed, the smallest of its spitz breeds. Since the Shiba’s arrival on American and British shores in the 1970s and 80s, it has been enchanting newcomers with its charming ways. Nordic dog features in perfect miniature, cat-like cleanliness and cunning intelligence. Beyond the Shiba’s natural beauty, enhanced by its proud demeanour and convincing portrait of self-importance, the breed possesses a delightful personality that demands the attention of a devoted owner. Written by prolific dog-book author and long-time devoted Shiba owner, Andrew De Prisco, Japanese Shiba, provides insightful chapters on breed history, characteristics of the breed and the breed standard as well as puppy selection, training, health care and showing. !
This book combines the expertise of breed specialists, veterinary surgeons, trainers and behaviourists with a team of experienced book designers, photographers and illustrators to create a resourceful and accurate guide for all Japanese Shiba owners. Illustrated with over 135 colour photographs, the book proves to be as attractive as it is informative. Innovations of modern science have enabled the publisher to present never-before-seen scanning electron micrograph images produced exclusively for this limited-edition series.

Isolated from intruders from across the sea, Japan basked in virtual independence for centuries. This highly ritualistic society, rather primitive compared to the Western world, with which it had not contact until the latter half of the 19th century, was content to pass on its history and culture without interruption. The nation's indigenous dogs, regarded today as 'Natural Monuments', are mostly members of the spitz family, including the Japanese Akita, Shiba, Tosa and many others. Spitz dogs derive from the colder climates and possess characteristic features that facilitate their survival in sub-zero conditions. Well-furred, erect and small ears protect the dog from wind and snow; a dense double coat provides insulation from the cold as well as coolness from heat, should the need arise; a well-furnished, tightly curled tail covers the dog's nose when he is sleeping in his typical circular position; a wolf-like muzzle warms the air through the long passages before entering the animal's lungs. From the tiny Shiba to the giant Akita, all the Japanese spitz breeds share these essential physical characteristics.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must have for the first time shiba owner., 1 Aug 2001
By A. Boyd "shigatsuhana" (West Midlands, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a great book on the Japanese shiba inu. Certainly one that a first-time shiba owner should have or read before bringing a shiba home. The pictures are wonderful. It is a basic but clear and decisive book. There are some editorial mistakes and some non-important information that is incorrect. The content of this book is information that a shiba inu breeder or experienced shiba inu owner would already know. However, this book is a welcome addition to my other books on the shiba inu and I'd recommend it for the new shiba fancier.

3.0 out of 5 stars good value for money, 2 Aug 2001
This is an interesting book. The overall content is good, aimed at the first time Shiba owner. Pity about the silly mistakes. Photo's do not always match their descriptions. This is a shame as the book is generally well written with enthusiasm and humour.
