Product Description

Synopsis

Who is Soderbergh? Currently Hollywood's hottest hot shot, Soderbergh burst onto the independent scene with his provocative, multi-award winning feature debut sex, lies and videotape in 1989. With the film world seemingly at his feet the guy from Baton Rouge committed critical and commercial hara-kiri, producing a black and white film about the life of writer Franz Kafka that fell foul of studios and audiences alike. The critics liked it though and they were to stay with him through a lean period, which produced increasingly personal, cine-literate projects which very few people saw. Out of favour in Tinseltown, Soderbergh continued to plough his own furrow, producing numerous notable Indie pics along the way. Though disillusioned with his craft, it was arguably during this period that he produced some of his best work. Thankfully the head honchos at Universal had kept Soderbergh's number on speed dial and when a director was needed to give a little sparkle to Out Of Sight, Soderbergh got the call. Back in the big time - but very much on his own terms - the rest as they say is history for the self-proclaimed luckiest bastard you ever saw. What's in it?

As well as an introductory essay, each of Soderbergh's films is reviewed and analysed. There's a handy reference section listing all the Soderbergh related publications- and there ain't many- and a full filmography including Soderbergh's tireless work as a producer and cameraman.

5.0 out of 5 stars An inspired disection of Soderbergh's films. Lucid & witty., 26 Jan 2002
By A Customer
The Pocket Essentials series has a reputation for being a cut above the average film guide books. The outstanding achievement of this book is to unearth Soderbergh's hidden gems, the films made between sex, lies and videotape and Out Of Sight. These rarely seen films, much derided by critics at the time, are explored by the author with intelligence and elan, inspiring the reader to hunt them down and view immediately. Fans of later work such as Erin Brockovich and Traffic are granted an insight into how these masterful movies were constructed and how the director's earlier work has informed all that he has laid down on celluloid.
The book explores the films in chronological order, detailing full cast and crew details, story synopsis, subtext, background, trivia, major nominations and awards, and a key moment. Wood has an ingenious eye for detail and plot, whilst managing a flowing style that ensures the uninitiated a clear picture of the basic plot points. There is no lack of humour in Wood's prose, especially in the trivia sections which are highly entertaining. The author had the full co-operation of Soderbergh in writing the book and this is where the book comes into its own, bestowing upon gems of information otherwise closely guarded.
Essential to any fans of Sodebergh's incredible canon, and surely a key aid to film academics, Wood has infused his passion for film and this director in particular into a vital companion piece and standalone disection of the most original A-list director working in Hollywood today

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating, insightful examination of Soderbergh's work., 31 Jan 2002
I really enjoyed Jason Wood's examination of Steven Soderbergh's career from film industry adoration to film industry contempt and to adoration again. I hadn't seen all of Soderbergh's films. Jason Wood gives you such an enticing taste of his work - film by film, (with details of plots, recurring themes, etc) that I wanted to watch them all - especially the ones that sank without trace e.g. 'Schizopolis'. Jason makes a good argument that it is Soderbergh's least commercially successful films that are the most interesting. He also points out that it is to Soderbergh's credit that he has managed to make intelligent 'mainstream' films within the studio system. It is a concise, informative book that is nicely spiced with interesting trivia. Aside from entertaining filmgoers, aspiring filmmakers could use this book as a cautionary guide to what extent you can be experimental and still get distribution.
