This is perhaps a good book for those interested in Highland regiments in Britain's "wars of empire".
His history of Highland culture before 1746 is partial and highly suspect. He seems to harbour a dislike for his subject which colours the work. Before the 17th century te work is very poorly researched and is bascially a work of his opinion with little no evidence given to support his claims.
It would be nice if Mr Reid could stick to writing about the British Army (his true interest?) rather than write these biased and revisionist "histories".

This fascinating book is a history of the Highland armies, from the 17th to the 19th centuries. Complete with many color and black-and-white illustrations, it tells the story of the evolution of the Highland armies, from clan levies of the Civil War to the kilted regiments at Waterloo. Though primarily a military history (this book is published by Military Illustrated magazine after all), it is quite fascinating, and a highly enjoyable read.
