Ramsey Campbell is one of the finest horror writers of all time, and as anyone who's read him will attest, a master of language and wit. These are two things he uses to the full in this bumper collection of non-fiction writings. He is particularly enjoyable, I'm afraid to say, when he's guiding us in the direction of having a laugh at other people's expense. Try his review of a Shaun Hutson novel, although the funniest thing is that he is after all pointing out what should be obvious to anyway with a brain (which Hutson fans often lack). There's also his enjoyable lexicon of horror terms and accounts of the trappings of fame and his visit to a junior school. If that's not enough there's an article on spanking films for you. On the minus side the collection (perhaps by its very nature) is patchwork. If i could have done without one whole section being reprints of introductions and afterwords to his books then that's only because I already have them in the books they were written for (as I fear many fans will). But it's still a pleasure to wallow in and find out more about Ramsey himself - more than having a great sense of humour he's also an intelligent commentator on the horror genre, and of course a great writer. Expensive, of course, but if you're a fan then you'll enjoy it. Even if you're not, you may enjoy it anyway.
