4.0 out of 5 stars A Cosmogonic Delight!, 4 Oct 2002

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
A Year in the Linear City is an intriguing novella, full of exotic characters and locations. The book is not driven by a single storyline but, as its title suggests, presents a year in the life of the city through eyes of a 'cosmogonic fiction' author named Diego. Through his interactions with his friends, relatives, and lovers, the strangeness of this city is revealed.
The choice of the protagonists occupation is revealing, as it leads to some mild reverse snobbism of non-genre authors, but as Di Fililpo seems destined to have his career unduly consigned to small publishers this is understandable.
Di Filipo's style is a pleasure to read, and there is some wonderful invention here - the highlight of this world being the Pompatics - winged ethereal beings who descend from the skies to bear the recently dead away to unknown fates. My only real disappointment is that while many questions are raised about the nature of this skewed world, very few answers are given, and it is a shame that the narrative doesn't build to any lasting resolution.
An enjoyable travelogue of a strange land, recommended if you can get hold of one!
