4.0 out of 5 stars obsessive compulsive, 14 Nov 2002
I came to this book on the off-chance on a slightly obscure shelf and, much like the lead character in the book, became thoroughly engrossed. The story is one of obsession and the object of the obsession is a painting by Dadd after which the book is titled. The painting is much like the story full of tiny intricate characters that you feel you almost know. It is an odd but absorbing read, almost too obsessional at times like the author has given a little too much of himself away. Although the travel writing element of the book is un-inspired (you get no real sense of the places visited) the actual story hangs together well even if it does end a little abruptly and with too neat a conclusion. I did enjoy this and would recomend it although with slight reservations.
