5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant, moving, melancholy book, 19 Aug 2003
By Liam (London) - See all my reviews
If you've ever been to Tobermory, you'll immediately recognise the setting for the eponymous tales and it remains in your mind throughout. If not, you'll be able to picture it quite vividly thanks to the affectionate yet critical portrait painted of it in this short but compelling collection.

The tales themselves touch on familiar themes: nostalgia for youth, the dying out of Gaelic language and culture, rural remoteness, the mixed feelings of love for one's parents and a desire to break free. Much of the humour is dark and there is one particularly harrowing tales of incestuous abuse, yet while this is no 'Monarch of the Glen' there is a charm and a warmth to most of the central characters.

Conveniently, the narration is led by the camera-holding bank manager, a pillar and confidant of the community, and the less-respected eavesdroppers at the local telephone exchange. Their nightly conversations provide the insight into the goings on of a dysfunctional community struggling to survive in what was the baby boom area everywhere else.

Short, sweet and deeply moving.

5.0 out of 5 stars Forget that Balamory nonsense, 5 Aug 2005
By Ian McDougall (Gourock United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I am not one for eloquent use of words and my grammar falls somewhere between terrible and very poor. I have never written
a book review but here goes.

I read Tobermory Days a few years ago and have read it 3 or 4 times since then and i find it almost impossible not to
read in one go.

If you visualise events well in your head then go to Tobermory
before you read this or at least have a look at the picture
of the main street as visualising the events that unfold in the
book gives it a kind of magic when you are reading it.
Its basically about a family moving to Mull and how the islands
various characters interact with each other and the island.
Its typically Scottish black humour, some bits very funny, some bits quite sad and some bits make you squirm.
Its quite nostalgic although i dont think it actually gives the
date of the events but i think its set in the lates 50s/early 60s and seems to suggest a more settled and gentler way if life
than we live now.

Its just very good, read it.
