5.0 out of 5 stars Philosophy and Pragmatism, 22 Jan 2004

Iain Rice must be one the most famous designers of model railways. 'Mainlines in Modest Spaces' is his second Atlantic publication focusing on British railway practice. It is the second in a series from Atlantic Publishing and looks similar to his previous book on urban layout design.
As we have come to expect in Mr Rice's books, the first chapers contain some fascinating theories, insights and opinions on the subject. He was fortunate enough to have experienced mainline steam at first hand and makes no apologies for indulging in nostalgia now and then.
There are 14 layout designs, a few for N but mainly for 4mm scale. OO gauge, with its relatively tight curves, is usually the most suitable gauge. The 'modest spaces' range from a tiny bedroom to a one-car garage.
Of necessity most designs focus on one location, and represent a section of main line with hidden staging tracks, fiddle yards or cassettes in order to keep trains 'off-stage'. Both single-track and double-track designs are offered. Subjects include the Somerset & Dorset, the Newcastle & Carlisle, the GWR in Cornwall and the Midland in the Peak District. Most designs focus on the late steam era.
It goes without saying that each design is well thought out and that the accompanying texts are informative and make good reading.
I find it hard to criticise this book. Most designs include duckunders or lift-out sections. I do realise that modelling a main line in a modest space calls for some compromises, but I am personally rather fond of walk-in designs and wish there had been a few more. On the other hand, being surrounded by your model world must have its compensations.
As with any book by Iain Rice, 'Mainlines in Modest Spaces' is highly recommended.
