Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Designed to introduce the world of Visual Basic programming to the absolute beginner, John Smiley's Learn to Program with Visual Basic is one of the more innovative titles on the market.

Rather than resorting to the typically dry style of the usual computer manual, Smiley uses a running commentary in his text, presenting the subject as if he were reporting on a day spent with a class of students. And it works a treat.

Combining this chatty approach with a project to build an application for a fictitious china shop, Smiley creates a comfortable atmosphere in which to inform and does a great job of tackling the basics of Microsoft's highly popular language in a patient and accessible way which teaches the ins and outs of the language and development environment without treating the reader like an idiot.

Topic coverage includes how to install the supplied version of the tool, how to plan projects from start to end, debugging and, of course, the nitty-gritty of producing working programs incorporating all the functionality Windows can offer.

Those with previous programming experience may do better with something a little more complex, but for the absolute beginner looking to break into the world of programming with Visual Basic there are few resources which can top this one.

Synopsis
A guide to the programming language for "absolute beginners" explores the theory, practice, and applications of Visual Basic 6.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for first-time programmers, 21 Jan 2001
By A Customer
This book is excellent for complete beginners, not just as an introduction to Visual Basic but also to programming as a whole. The classroom scenario gives you fellow students to learn with, and the tone of the book is instructive without being dry, and very encouraging. Progress is made at just the right pace, each chapter building on the last and introducing something new. You won't be a fully-fledged programmer by the end, but you'll have a good basic understanding on which to build. Highly recommended to anyone who is considering learning programming but is not technically-minded and who is looking for a book that will fully explain things without being patronising.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very Good - If not long winded, 22 Dec 2000
On the whole the book was very good but by the time i'd reached page 300 I still was longing to get into some real coding. Not for the impatient.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy it, 27 Mar 2002
After deciding to teach myself VB I ran out and purchased a few books on the subject and gave up on them, but after searching the net for VB programmers I heard of this book, bought it, and now two days later I am halfway through and enjoying reading every page, the way Mr Smiley has presented this book (virtual classroom) is by far the best way of writing to teach, if like me you are new to VB buy this book first.
