1.0 out of 5 stars Interesting title - but extremely inaccurate!, 16 Aug 2004
By Mr. K. Nicholson "Keith_NN" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Nice pocket sized book (10.5cm x 15cm) but at only 16 pages it makes you wonder how they managed to cram in so many mistakes! While it was nice to see the addition of Martha Tabram and Alice McKenzie in the walk (some people argue the first and last Ripper victims) it was criminal that Liz Stride (accepted as one of the five canonical victims) is completely absent!

Ripper facts in this tomb are so bad that it makes you wonder if the other site information is correct... although it is nice to see none Ripper sites included just because they are contemporary of the time.

I recommend you don't bother with this title and buy John Eddleston's "Jack The Ripper: An Encyclopaedia" instead, it has its own Ripper Walk in the Resources chapter.

3.0 out of 5 stars An interesting walk, 15 Sep 2008
This book provides a very interesting walk through the east end of London, following in the footsteps of Jack The Ripper.

There were 3 main problems with the book. These are:
Mixed up dates - Some of the dates in the book are wrong, victim's ages and the worst one was the year that the 10 Bells pub was established. The book is roughly 6 years late. It is easy to spot this as the pub has the year it was established written on the sign. If the author had done the walk, this would have been easy to spot and is very disappointing.
Missing victim - One of the Ripper's victims is completely missed out of the walk. Liz Stride is completely absent from the walk and there is not even a brief mention of her anywhere.
Order of sites - This is a minor quibble that is purely personal. The walk is not done in the order that events occured, I appreciate this would make the walk more difficult but I feel it would have been better to do things in the correct order.

Apart from these things the walk is very interesting and there are notes about other landmarks that you pass. I did it as part of a family day out and we all found it very enjoyable.

If you are interested in the Ripper murders this book is reccomended, but you should make sure that you take a proper reference book with you as well to check facts and also to help you find Liz Stride's murder site. You should also take a camera so that you can get photos of each place of interest and compare these to photos from the period.
