Product Description

Review

"The love story, the black humour, the sinister thriller element, the evocation of the fantastic beauty of Barcelona and the vivid, tragic-comic characters we encounter - all of these balls are kept whirling until they land softly at the end. The writing is always sharp and economical... moving and eloquent" Norman Schwenk.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Welcome to Barcelona's twilight zone", 28 Mar 2006
By A Customer
For anyone tired of reading about serial killers on the loose or yet another search for the Holy Grail, this book is the perfect antidote.

The initial intrigue of the mysterious appearance of a postcard pushed under the door of our hero, Lucas' apartment takes a 90 degree turn when he meets the homeless 'Roof People' of Barcelona's Gothic quarter then he and his newly acquired girlfriend Nuria are kidnapped by a religious cult who believe they are reincarnation of members of the Cathar Sect from the 13th Century.

As Lucas relates the details of his experiences to his motley associates Sean Hogg and Igbar Zoff, both so eccentric as to be totally believable, he slowly but surely slides into his own personal drug and alcohol hell.

Despite the often surreal twilight feel to the book, it's totally compelling and like all good books, the reader is left with a feeling of missing old friends once the final page is turned.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark humour and whirlwind romance, 6 Jul 2005
This book literally kept me gripped until the very end. The whole story wasn't like anything I'd ever read before, successfully revealing to the reader the underworld of Barcelona while we watch a touching love story unfold.
The story weaves together an interesting mix of characters and settings- from Spanish drunks in the slums of Barcelona to a serene and calm setting in the mountains, which hide a strict religious cult from the eyes of the world. The characters themselves seem to linger in the mind long after you have read it.
If you like stories that stand out on their own for being different, or if you want to be shown an entirely different yet believable world, then consider this book- I promise you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Run to buy it, 17 May 2005

Perhaps all you need to know is, I could not put this down.

What is the colour of a dog running away? I don't know.
Who is Lucas really? Is there anyone after him? Who sent the postcard? Is it all planned or just bizarre conincidence?

This novel is in turn amusing, chilling and surreal - but all TOO real. The potential of the Gothic quarter of Barcelona is realised in all its depth here. Roof people spring from the night and off the pages of this book. Even the smallest character is deftly realised.
Gwyn is a story teller and writer of the highest order (an all too uncommon trait, in my humble). While his characters reflect on concepts of truth and fiction, there are ample surfaces here for the light of imagination and intrigue to play. It is filmic and yet surreal, sometimes gritty but certainly beautiful.
The portrayal of the sect is accurate psychologically and in all the detail of living.
If you've ever had a rough night on the town, ever fallen in love or ever not really known how it all fit together, this book has something for you.
Read this novel slowly to worry each metaphor and revel in the repartee or read it quickly for the trill of the pace and plot.

Either way - read it.
