Product Description

Deaf Education through Listening and Talking. -- April 1999

"An excellent collection of short stories." "The book presents such a positive portrayal of a deaf child." --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

From the Publisher

In Northern Lights, the hero is 9-year-old Matthew who is deaf, but he still has a string of big adventures along the rugged coastline of north-east England as told in this exciting collection of short stories. Because he copes so well with his disability, he may well become a role model for children similarly handicapped. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting stories give a positive view of deafness., 29 Mar 2001
By A Customer
My five year old son listened to this collection of short stories with rapt interest. Each story involves the hero in exciting adventures, set in the North East of England, and portrays a boy with a hearing impairment in a positive light. As an educator I would recommend this book to teachers who are integrating students with special needs in to their classrooms. It could also be used as a starting point for discussion regarding tolerance and acceptance of people with disabilities. An excellent collection of stories in their own right made more interesting by a hero whose disability does not hold him back.

4.0 out of 5 stars My three children enjoyed this book., 7 April 2000
By A Customer
My 9-year old son, who is hearing and reads well-above grade level, thoroughly enjoyed reading the stories on his own. My initial concern that the rich vocabulary and occasional use of British phrases would hinder his comprehension and enjoyment was unfounded. Because the reading level was far beyond the ability of my 9-year old son who is deaf and reads by sight at an average 3rd grade level, I've been reading the stories aloud (using sign lanuage). The vocabulary has challenged my signing skills (I can communicate with my son but am far from being at the level of an interpreter), but the stories still delighted him and his younger sister.

4.0 out of 5 stars A charming story., 7 April 2000
By A Customer
This is a really very charming story with realistic characters--which is hard to do when writing about children. Having lived in the UK it brought back some good memories as well.
