Nick Constable's "Ancient Ireland" offers an overview of Ireland's beginnings, from prehistory to the Treaty of Limerick in 1691. The book's large format and dozens of stunning photographs make for an enjoyable browse through history, with just enough text to put historical events, familiar names, and the featured photographs into context. While it can't offer anything new to the serious researcher or historian, even those well-versed in early Irish history can enjoy this book on a visual level, as the generous size, sharp detail and artistry of the photographs are worth the book's very reasonable price. Photographic subjects range from stone circles to museum exhibits (including a 6"x12" view of the Tara brooch), and from the mummies of St. Michael's to modern townscapes. In short, it's an excellent choice for the armchair traveller who fancies a trip not only to Ireland, but back in time as well.
