Product Description

Ian Colquhoun is an extraordinary young man surviving a mind-numbing attack that resulted in the loss of his legs. Yet, somehow his burned and broken body fought on. The agonies and extraordinary experiences, courage and his determination to survive make this book gripping and inspirational reading. Given the last rites three times, Ian has come through kidney failure, a seven-week coma, heart problems, 65 percent burns and has endured more than twenty operations. Thanks to the Internet there were thousands of people praying for his life all over the world. The burns were to his chest/abdomen, arms, hands, chin and worst of all, his legs. They were burned right through to the bone. They were going to have to come off if he was to live. His parents were told that still might not be enough to save his life though, Yet, somehow, his burned, broken body and soul fought on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the genre, 17 Aug 2007
This book is simply incredible. The survivor/victim genre might be well worn by now but this surely transcends anything hitherto written in this vein?

From the opening chapter of a young youth innocently enjoyin a day out supporting his beloved Hibernian Football Club you can feel the warmth, humility and humour the man possesses. What follows will make your jaw drop. I'm not going to spoil the story-line but this is genuinely shocking. Ian makes you feel the pain like no other writer could. It could be your body that's being destroyed. Your life slipping away.

Really, if you read one book of this genre make it this one. If you read one book this year make it this one. In fact if you read one book make it this one. It's that good. Buy, buy, buy, that's all I can say.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gut-wrenching story, 18 Aug 2007
This book takes you into the pits of one man's hell! It far surpasses any misery book I have read. Some people enjoy the thrills of a controlled frightening experience of being on a fairground ride, this is not one of those experiences!!! To see this man sitting being interviewed on the Richard & Judy Show with his prosthetic legs on show was so brave of the author.

Ian recounts the horrific experience and what it felt like to come so close to death, but he transcends that with his terrific narration of how he first come to terms with the terrible atrocity that he went through. Then the real story starts, you just have to read this man's account of what he went through. I nominate this book as Book of the Year for 2007. A superbly written book and truly gut-wrenching story!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars An un-put-downable story of fortitude that surpasses imagination, 30 Aug 2007
By Inspired (Kent, England) - See all my reviews
Just think, we all take our legs for granted. It's even hell if we catch a fingernail and lose the use of a finger for a few hours or so. To have your legs burnt from you and then have the rest of your body's exterior burnt to a near frazzle is something we leggies could never comprehend. On top of all of this, Ian caught an Asian stain of the deadly killer bug MRSA!

So with that in mind, when Ian, the author, tells a national newspaper that losing his legs was the best thing that ever happened to him then you would have to think him mad! However, when you read his book you will understand why, and what a book it is.

This is about the innards of a man, of what mankind is made of and the ill to survive all what is thrown at us. Some say man is weak animal, lacking the will to survive. Read this man's story and you will see that Ian possesses all of the stuff that filmmakers try to instil into great films, yet do not quite succeed in doing. All what a film fails to do this book succeeds in doing. You are there with the man, you feel his pain, his sorrows, his failures and then the eventual starburst of his successes. Unquestioningly, an un-put-downable book!

This book deserves some sort of recognition and an award. I dearly hope they make a film of Ian's life, as it is the stuff that mankind's existence is made of. Ian, good luck, you deserve it.
