Product Description

Book Description

The famed 'grey ghost' of the dog world, the Weimaraner is a robust, proud hunting dog of German origin. As a family dog, the Weimaraner is protective and affectionate; as a hunter, he is multi-talented and trainable; and as a show dog, he is aristocratic and eye-catching. The 'grey ghost' has fascinated dog lovers for centuries and continues to be a distinctive companion animal. He is revered for his friendly disposition and his attentive, fearless qualities as a watchdog.

A grey spectre poised on a misty meadow, forepaw raised; an illusion of molten silver blending into fog. Two golden eyes pierce the smoky haze. Vision, artform or ancient canid? For centuries, the 'grey ghost' called the Weimaraner has captivated the souls and imaginations of hunters, artists and dog aficionados. Cloaked in mystery and controversy, the Weimaraner remains as much a paradox today as it was centuries ago when it was closely guarded by German royalty, who prized the dog's power and endurance. Revered also for his loyalty and devotion to his master, the Weimaraner was sometimes called upon to defend his hunter/master from the wildebeest encountered during the hunt. Although it has evolved into a prized family hunting companion, the Weimaraner's original instincts remain strong. Highly intelligent and affectionate, it is fearless and protective and will still track and retrieve wildfowl as well as furred game such as fox or rabbit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellently illustrated book, comprehensive wealth of info, 30 May 2001
By sahne@weimaraners.co.uk (Manchester, England) - See all my reviews
Super book for anyone with a love of Weimaraners, or trying to find information about the breed, clear precise layout of information, good use of boxouts and clear illustrations /diagrams to support the text. Many useful tips to help get out of any problems and everything you need to know about caring for the health and welfare of your pet. Must have for all existing and potential owners. Out of the dozen or so books about the Weimaraner owned by us this is the one we would recommend to all novice and even fairly experienced owners.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the novice Weimaraner owner, 3 Sep 2001
By A Customer
Well illustrated, easy to read and understand. Explaines the breed well, also training, health, showing etc. A good basic read, without the author refering to themselves and their show winnings! This is all about the dogs! If you only want one book, this is it!

2.0 out of 5 stars A review from a first-time Weimaraner owner, 14 April 2006
By Jonathan K. Smales (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
If like me, you are going to buy a Weimaraner for the first time then this book lacks any really useful information. Some of the information given is relevant for almost any dog. The only problem is, a Weimaraner isn't like a Labrador or Collie. They are far more stubborn and will not just lay down and beg!
I found the book skirted over some of the real problems. My Weimaraner, Samantha, has had lots of problems with her skin (a common problem I later found out). However, under the section, Health Care, there is only a brief mention of skin problems, but pages and pages about fleas and ticks. Do we really need all those close-up photos? And why is a whole section devoted to Showing Your Weimaraner? It is interesting, but hardly needs so much detail. Training a Weimaraner is very difficult and they underestimate the strength and stubborness of this bred. I now have a dog trainer, and the simple ideas and tricks he is using are making a difference. There is also nothing about female Weimaraners and what happens when they have their first period. How long does it last? What do you need to do? Pros and cons of having them spayed?
I don't want to show Samantha in competitions, I just want a healthy, happy dog that doesn't jump at everybody in the street, pull on the lead and jerk from one side of the pavement to the other. This book simply didn't help me.
P.S. I love Samantha to bits, but be prepared to put in a lot of hard work and plenty of patience!
