5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding details and fresh insight into Hillary and 603., 26 Oct 2000
By A Customer
David Ross's work brings new research material to an important period of British history. Clearly Mr Ross has spent much time at primary source level to bring to the reader fresh and minute detail on Hillary and his contemparies who flew with 603 Squadron. The depth and breadth of the contents means that there is something of value for every reader - be it aviation historians or simply people interested in learning something about the young men who defended the British Isles in 1940. Whilst the main focus of the book is on Hillary this author manages to skillfully weave, around the main character, powerful insights into the lives of his Hillary's fellow pilots. Through Ross's book the names of Hillary, Waterston, the MacDonald brothers, Stapleton, Stokoe and all the other young men of 603 are rightly consigned to their place in legend. The world is a richer place for David Ross's work

5.0 out of 5 stars The Spriit of the Last Enemy, 23 May 2008
By Geoffrey L. Steen - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A sound tapestry of research is the structure, the recording of the serial numbers of aircraft can be read with interest by the afficiando or ignored by the aesthete. The reflections are of interest to both.

However somehow the book captures the spirit of Richard Hilary and of his time once again. The yellowed love letters of doomed romance, The faded photographs of the long haired boys.

Once again the metaphysical the apparition at the start and end of the book. Would the Last Enemy have been the same and as interesting without the premonition of the last flight and death of Hilary's friend Peter Pease.

So amongst all the great research and chronology of facts we are left with some metaphysical speculation. "Did the author really see a ghost spirit", we are left to guess and enjoy, and that is human which is perhaps what it is all about.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating read full of well researched information ., 24 Oct 2000
By A Customer
It is obvious from the onset of reading this book that the author,Mr D Ross, has shown excellent investigative skills in researching his subject matter. The book is honest and very thorough in all aspects. It gives a clear picture of one of this countries true heroes from his early days to his sudden demise. This book is a must for any aviation historian who has a passion for world war two aeroplanes and the men who flew them.
