Please don't be put off by the negative review of this book. The Britannia was quite an advanced aircraft for its time and Bristol took a few risks with such an innovative approach. This resulted in delivery delays that caused the airliner to have a relatively short life in BOAC and the other original customers as the jet age arrived. It went on to have a second career with the charter airlines such as the eponymous Britannia Airways. The aircraft itself was very comfortable to fly in as I recall from my childhood. The book is superbly produced with the very highest quality artwork and photographs, and is worth every penny. The same series also produced books on the Comet and VC10, both equally well produced, and also highly recommended.

Having flown on the Britannia with different carriers including non-stop from Teesside to Toronto and return I raved about the comfort of this aircraft for years. However with the internet information to hand I have been amazed to find that almost one in six of every Britannia built was involved in accidents - an amazing percentage in todays aircraft safety terms. To call it an " Aircraft of Distinction " seems to be trying to put it in the same class as the Concorde. Alas my original euphoria after crossing the Atlantic in this aircraft in 1969 has now been crushed with the accident reports to hand. To make matters worse an office colleague who flew on her Honeymoon in 1967 in a BRITANNIA was killed with her new husband when the pilots failed to set the altimeter on their departure. It crashed into a hillside on approach to Llublijana, Yugoslavia. To me the Aircraft of Distinction has a sadly tainted record.
