Product Description

Book Description

Most chess puzzle books put you in an artificial situation: you are told a combination exists, what the theme is and what you are required to achieve. This one is different. In a real game situation, a player may sometimes need to find a combination. On the other hand, he/she may need to reject a tactical idea and simply find a good positional move. The task is to find the right move, whatever it may be. The puzzles in this book put you in precisely that situation. John Nunn, a top-class grandmaster and one of the world's best chess solvers, has selected 250 positions to test your skills to the full. In each case you are challenged to find the right move. Spectacular ideas abound in these positions, but it is for you to decide whether to go in for them, or whether you would be falling into a trap. If you need them, there are hints to help you on your way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best presentation style for chess puzzle collection, 4 Aug 2009
The extended edition of the book gets even better. The problems are well selected to illustrate various concepts and key ideas in chess, especially combinational vision and intuition. The presentation format is brilliant; for each problem there is a hint at the end of the book, where one could see the difficulty rating of the problem and more importantly there is a small observation of weaknesses in a given position and how one could try to explore them. This makes solving difficult problems more enjoyable, developing a good habit to analyze positions first and then find a plan of action. Hints help also to cope with problems that are slightly beyond the present ability, which is a good way for training. At the very end of the book the full solution is given with one or two diagrams to guide the reader's eye through the tree of key variations. I have a dozen of chess puzzle books, but this one is my absolutely favorite!
