These columns read much better as a diversion to be looked forward to in the paper rather than as a collection. Whilst a great writer or radical thinker may justify the honour of a collection of their off-the-cuff sprawlings, it isn't clear that we should be subsidising Spanier's game by purchasing this - i think it is fair to say it isn't really going to help any of us. If you've missed the columns and on a wet saturday afternoon have 20 minutes to spare in bookshop, it is certainly worth a flick though, but in terms of increasing your expectations of winning against the man at the victoria, I'd think a better trade would be to wait for the next rollover jackpot and invest in four tickets.

You certainly wouldn't buy this book to learn how to play poker. There are 93 short articles most of which were for his column in The Independent. All are amusing, some are informative and you may even learn something. Books that claim to teach you how to play poker are almost always very dull and badly written. Luckily this is not one of them. David was good at telling stories (these are real stories, not the usual poker "stories" you get at the bar!) and these are some short ones that were suitable for his weekly column. It won't take you long to read but it's fun while it lasts. For a longer read his Total Poker is recommended.
