Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

This is the first Robin Hudson novel not to feature "girl" in the title. Instead it has "man", and "Manly Man" at that. A radical new direction? As if. Sparkle Hayter knows her forte and sticks to it bullishly. The battle of the sexes is her thing, upon which she hoists cartoon escapades thinly disguised as plot. Vive la difference. Robin Hudson is a television news reporter (as Hayter was), who thinks like a stand-up comedian (which Hayter is). She has two handsome boyfriends (Hayter ...?), a programme to produce on the "Man of the Future", and suddenly, a hat, which may belong to a John Doe. Within pages she is ensconced in a world of missing monkeys, powerful businessmen, animal liberationists and feminists, all of whom appear connected to a mysterious chemical known only as "Adam 1", which could have the potential to bring the gender war to a swift halt. Who can resolve the conundrum? And who will film it? Hayter does not write badly. She just does not write very well. Her prose has the balls of a Rottweiler, but the subtlety of one too, being infested with one-liners, some of which are funny, some of which are repetitious or strained. Occasionally she hints at darker points, such as Robin's infertility, but they are usually sacrificed to the gag quota. As it is, Sparkle Hayter has written a sassy thriller that will probably be read and forgotten by millions. --David Vincent --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Synopsis

5.0 out of 5 stars Back on Track with 5 star performance, 28 May 1999
By A Customer
In her last Robin Hudson book (Revenge of the Cootie Girls) I was starting to think that Sparkle Hayter was going off the boil - I just didn't get the point. I'm happy to say that this is right back on track and possibly the best she's done so far. Robin is now head of her department at ANN - admittedly the department where they put all the people that nobody else wants - like Litigious Liz the blind reporter with a chip on both shoulders - and the department that usually covers the skateboarding duck stories. Robin is putting together a documentary on the future of 'manliness' - what will happen to men as women become more powerful? - which brings her into contact with extreme feminists, strange old guys who want to live forever and a group of militant animal rights activists who want to save a kidnapped group of Bonobo monkeys. And then there's the mystery man with the hat! Its fun, the plot is almost as complicated as Robin's love-life and there are some people in here that you wish you could take home and make your friends - for example, Blue the taxi driver who is still dating his ex-wife and Jack, the wealthy boss who wants to know what makes women tick. Buy it, buy all 4 (but maybe leave the cootie girls til last). You don't need to have read all the others to understand this one. And then when you've finished these, buy Janet Evanovitch's stories about Stephanie Plum.

4.0 out of 5 stars Complex Plotting and brilliant characterisation, 16 Nov 2000

This takes Robin into maturity. The story line is very strong and it doesn't have the same all out humour as her previous work. There are real aspects of darkness here. Having said that Robin is still as off the wall as ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars always an entertaining read, 11 May 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Last Manly Man (Paperback)
i am always looking for light and entertaining women's novels to read after a long day of work but it is hard to also find ones that are witty, intellignet and interesting, which is why it was great to discover this author. very fun read with all the elements of the fun genres- mystery, a little sci-fi, romance. I have bought several of my friends her novels for gifts and they all enjoyed them immensely.
