5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning. Simply stunning., 24 Feb 2000
By A Customer
I still rate this book as one of the best ever - it gets read on a regular basis. The ideas behind it, freedom of speech, anarchy, personal development, talk radio in the US, all this AND a warped kind of love story mixed in with everything else - and done neatly and properly. Hard to believe it's only O'Connell's second novel. For me Quinsigamond comes alive in this book- bits are cross-referenced from the first novel, Box Nine, but you don't need to have read it first - this is a self-contained story, only referring to earlier stuff for the die-hard fans. But the story here is king - all the separate parts slowly coming together in an unexpected fashion, and a surprise finale that actually IS a surprise - quite a rarity in these times of audeince research and "satisfying" endings. All I can say is that it's worth picking up just on the off-chance - I only know of one person who hated it, against the ten to fiteen who I've loaned it to who have loved it, and then gone and bought their own copies!
