Acromegaly is a relatively rare disease caused by a pituitary tumour that stimulates overproduction of growth hormone. If untreated, acromegaly leads to substantially increased morbidity and mortality. Even in the shorter term, the effects on patients are severe and distressing, including increases in hand and foot size, changing facial features and carpal tunnel syndrome. The definitions of best practice in the treatment of acromegaly have been changing rapidly during the 1990s and this book is a complete review of understanding of the disease and its treatment. It covers all aspects of the subject, including a new definition of "cure", major changes in practice with regard to surgery and radiotherapy, and the new drug therapies that are being developed. Any doctor or nurse who is likely to see patients with acromegaly should be interested in having this book in their clinic. The contributors are international researchers on the subject from the USA and Europe.
