"AS’s books never fail to fascinate" Choice Magazine (April 2004)

Product Description

We've chosen over 260 special places to stay throughout Ireland, north, south, east and west: B&Bs in fascinating family homes, hotels of all sorts; fishing lodges, keeps and castles; self-catering cottages, farms and bothies. When that incomparable Irish mist lifts from the countryside, the varieties and eccentricities of the people and places of this small island emerge. We open doors onto these riches. Ireland's bounding tiger has not left behind the age-old sense of spontaneous hospitality; these open-hearted people simply love sharing their space and their rich conversation with all who come to make genuine contact. The entries in this guide are special in many different ways: we choose places for the warmth of their welcome, their style whether simple or sumptuous and look for good value for money and for environmental awareness. Every property in the book has been inspected. Symbols, maps, colour photos, clear directions and quick reference indices help guide our readers to the best choice for them, and our well-researched, fresh and lively write-ups paint an accurate picture.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, 6 May 2005
By Adele Cocchiglia (Dublin, Ireland) - See all my reviews
We discovered the Alistair Sawday books by accident ... and now we don't go anywhere without checking if there is one for whatever county or country we are travelling to!

We happened to be staying in a most welcoming and perfect cottage in Meath when we discovered the Alistair Sawday guide to Ireland on the bookshelf. Then we saw that the cottage we were staying in was listed and we knew we had found the guide book for us!

We have since stayed in around 4 or 5 places in the book and all of them were special. What we like about them is that they are not all obvious luxurious hotels but some are chosen because of their own particular charm, for whatever reason (the quiet, the scenery, the welcome, the food or whatever).

The Alistair Sawday guides seem to know exactly the type of accommodation you're looking for and the Ireland one is particularly full of places you would recommend to everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sawday's never disappoints! A gem!, 2 Feb 2007

If you want to find a Special place to stay, ask Alastair Sawday.

Unlike other ratings for places to stay, Sawday's really live up to what they say. You won't find an abundance of places in your chosen locale, but the few that have been unearthed are real gems.

In the Ireland book, you can stay in a cosy cottage, a sumptuous castle or even a lighthouse! Also, he doesn't just list places that cost the earth; over 85 places do B&B for two at £70 or less per night. This book cannot be recommended enough.

Definitely a worthwhile purchase if you mean to stay in Ireland.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ulster, Munster, Leinster, Connacht/Connaught, 24 April 2009
By E. A. Mullen (Dublin, Ireland) - See all my reviews

This book is certainly full of special places to stay.
Unfortunately, however, the indexing and layout of the book is perplexing (even for an Irish person who is familiar with the lay of the land).
The editor would be wise to note that it would be so much easier (for everyone) if the counties were laid out in alphabetical order instead of by province (which incidentally are currently in incorrect order).
Also, the indexing is sparse and clearly doesn't match the number of wonderful houses featured in this book.
