5.0 out of 5 stars Did I really need this one?, 17 Nov 2005
Why did I title my review like this? Quite simply, the reason is that I have the previous edition and normally would not dream of updating with the previous version only just over a year old. However, when I saw in the foreword that there were around 50 additions in the latest, I couldn't resist (particularly given the current good offer on Amazon!). The main reason I couldn't resist is that a couple of months ago I stayed in the best hotel (note, not the one with the most stars) I have ever stayed in in this country. I'm not going to give away where it was but it lived up to all of the Sawday's promises 'nothing dull', 'delightful people' and so on. It was wonderful.

The latest edition is already well thumbed with plans for weekends away in train. The photos are good, the paper is good quality and the text is informative and most importantly, true!

Can I also commend the Sawday's web site? Easy to navigate, good maps or word search. Enough to start you off but now you're just in time to put this guide on your Christmas wish list.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hotels to treasure, 12 Nov 2004
By I. N. Terry (Worcester, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Alastair Sawday has a finely tuned sense of what lifts a hotel out of the mundane or functional into a special experience. He treasures individual enterprises that strive to offer the best possible accommodation, food and drink in exceptional surroundings. No branded chains are found here! All the usual practical information is laid out in a straightforward format, but it's the eye for the unusual and the quirky that makes this book so useful for the traveller who wants more than just a bed for the night.

By A Customer
an excellent book, clear directions, lovely pics and spot on reviews! Giving you all the information you are dying to know when booking a B & B. is the bathroom clean? what are the beds like? Plain old breakfast or lavish continental? Host amiable and chatty? beautiful surroundings? I could go on and on! If you love pottering around the country and then finding the bestest place to stay! Then buy this book!!!
