5.0 out of 5 stars An interesting perspective, 26 Dec 2001
By A Customer
Billy MacKinnon's screenplay of Hideous Kinky is a fascinating work which successfully bridges the gap between the original novel by Esther Freud and the film by adding the final link necessary to complete the chain of creativity. With the aid of visual stills taken directly from the film, MacKinnon's screenplay effortlessly links the novel to the Blockbuster film to give a unique sense of 'film influencing literature' as opposed to the more usual feel of 'literature influencing film.' Thus, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the process of transferring a novel into a film, as well as anyone who enjoyed the original novel but is prepared to consider the story from a new and fresh perspective.
MacKinnon's screenplay thankfully does not attempt to contradict Freud's novel, but instead enhances it. The simple lay-out of MacKinnon's work, which consists of complete dialogue and short intense descriptions thankfully disallows readers to lose themselves amongst pages of heavy description and instead prompts them to focus on the essentials of character, location and speech. The stage directions help to focus our imagination and give us a cinematic appreciation which aids our enjoyment and understanding of the film. This screenplay is suitable even for the more reluctant reader, as it is a light and focused read which can be enjoyed scene by scene over an idefinite period of time.

4.0 out of 5 stars hideously beautiful, 3 Jan 2004
This book is simply beautiful and a joy to read! it is the adventure of a young mother and her two children as they travel through spain into south africa and meet many interesting and intriguing people. Told through the eyes of a young girl, the naviety and ecitement of the narrator make this a beautiful and easy to read short story.
