'... will delight the heart of the mechanically minded.' Scots Magazine 'The author's father was one of Beadmore's mangers: this background and a lot of careful research has clerly been necessary in order to trace the threads of such a web. A unique piece of transport history.' Transport Digest

A lot of careful research has clearly been necessary...a unique piece of transport history.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very confusing, 22 Jul 2009
By Charles E. Mackay "charlese212" (Ecosse) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a very simple production of a very complex empire and the man behind it. Beardmore was a Scottish iron master whose family were from England and in a series of moves built the biggest steel production line in Scotland in the east end of Glasgow. In an effort to use all his production capacity Beardmore put his fingers into a lot of pies including aviation and automobiles. Reflecting the times he was better served by the decisions of his employees than he himself as an employer.
Hurst has caught the fundamentals of the mess of empire and the confusion of ideas correctly. There is a misinterpretation of data and detail and it comes to light in the aviation sections which have to be read and cross checked against standard works. Even some of the works he refers to are blatantly innaccurate and the illustrations could have been a lot better at the price
But really this is a fine effort written from a distance, South Africa and to quote a former employee of Beardmore - William Beardmore took my lungs - no wonder the place went bust after reading this
