Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Gerry McGovern got rich by giving information away and so he understands the Internet better than most of his peers. His Dublin-based company, Nua (which means "new" in Irish) has become one of the world's most successful Internet consultancies, mainly on the back of its free Internet Surveys which are essentially digests of market research on the Internet economy.

But inside Gerry the successful businessman with a list of blue-chip clients, there is another Gerry--the Digital Philosopher--struggling to get out. Every Sunday night, subscribers to his weekly New Thinking Web newsletter find an e-sermon waiting in their mail-boxes on subjects as diverse as the importance of listening to young people, the managerial ability of Alex Ferguson or the future of the family in the digital age. The Caring Economy is a book-length exposition of McGovern's digital philosophy and its application to business. Its title comes from his conviction that the two go together. "A society that stops caring is in for trouble in the long-term", he writes, but companies which don't care about their customers are also doomed. The world is changing. Companies that are not on the Internet in 2005 will not be companies at all. And if they want to be on the Net, they will have to learn to deal with new types of consumer who are smart, sharp and resent being patronised. Business on the Net is about winning the trust of such people. And the only way to do that is to show that you care about them. Who said God and Mammon don't mix? --John Naughton

Synopsis

A cutting-edge appraisal of business practice in the forthcoming Digital Age, this book demonstrates clearly how effective communication and customer interaction will be even more important in the new millennium.

5.0 out of 5 stars Putting his money where his mouth is, 10 April 2001
By A Customer
This is a great book. Author Gerry McGovern, a real Internet guru, practised what he preached with his dynamic company N.U.A., and made sure that his staff were taken care of in the tumultuous events of March 2001 when he clinched a fantastic deal. A good read for anybody who wants to see what caring means in the digital economy. Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Evolutiont of the Internet economy and phylosophy, 6 Feb 2001
By A Customer
"Caring economy" is a compelling, well-written, factual and at times emotional history of the Information revolution. Being actually written by one of the "revolutioners", the book provides for deeper insight into facts and events that gave birth to the Internet economy. Along with the factual side, that takes a reader through the chain of dates and events, the author raises numerous questions that provoke genuine answers and unconventional interpretation of the laws of new economy.

The author also addresses the subject of information value and network value, both of which I have found interesting. The author does not let himself deep into quantitative techniques, as the book allows for little more than just a good picture on "maths of success" of which is known so little. But this is by far outweighed by the unique qualitative knowledge that the author provides.

First I obtained the book from the CUBS library a couple of weeks ago, and now I'm ordering it with my first ever Amazon order. So how much better would you like it to be?

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read for serious cyber citizens, 2 Jul 1999
By A Customer
This book is a must read for all thinking cyber citizens. Being an instrument for positive change, it lifts our virtual experiences and lives, like a big wave, and toss's us in the right direction. Personally I found the book inspiring enough to write poetry about. In essence, valuable virtual food for thought.
