From the point of view of a fan of the Grand National this book is simply the best ever written about the race. Mr. Pinfold eschews the standard, received history of the National and, instead, has delved into the true background using contemporary sources. Not content with simply re-hashing the usual repetitive 'facts', he has turned received opinion on its head and, quite simply, rewritten the history of this great race. No longer should 'Lottery' be considered the first winner (it was 'The Duke') nor should Maghull be considered the original home of the National - it has always been Aintree.
However, this book is not merely a history of one particular race but a complete history of racing in the Liverpool area. As someone brought up literally 800 yards from Aintree Race Course
I found it fascinating to read and learn so much about the reasons for the National along with the behaviour of fellow Liverpudlians throughout the history of the race.
Mr. Pinfold should be commended on writing a book that followers of the National have long deserved. It may well be time the authorities at Aintree amended their extant records.
