The book is illustrated in black and white in the crisp uncluttered style on the same lines as the author's earlier work covering Europe. Organised by region, the book covers typical troops as well as the more exotic types that fill some books. Each regional section starts with a very informative piece explaining organisation, tactics and pay. The extensive text accompanying each illustration covers sources, alternatives and colours.

The book is very well bound with a gorgeous red cover embossed with gold figures. Text is beautifully printed on cream paper, giving the feel of an old, or at the least timeless, volume. A perfect companion to volume 1, it is a joy to own.
