5.0 out of 5 stars Before the deluge, 17 Feb 2001
By R. N. Owen (FERNDALE, MID GLAMORGAN United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
An authoritative account of the scene in Liverpool just before the rest of the world caught on. Illustrated with excellent photographs, this book can be seen as a companion piece to 'Hamburg' by Alan Clayson. The two books show as clearly as it'll ever get how The Beatles started off as rubbish, improved almost overnight, and then..... Well. you know the rest. I hope Sam recalls enough for a second book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Explodes the myth that Merseybeat started with The Cavern, 6 April 2000
By A Customer
This book explodes the myth that Merseybeat started with The Cavern. The Beatles, Gerry & The Pacemakers, The Big Three and Rory Storm were all actively selling out shows according to author Sam Leach, a pioneering promoter who saw the management of The Beatles slip through his grasp by an ambitious and wealthy Brian Epstein. The anecdotes and stories reveal the way it was in Liverpool 1961 and with many unpublished photos we can see an insight from one who was there before the boom.
